 The Canine Influenza Vaccine

Canine Influenza is a disease that is causing many problems around the United States, and now, thankfully, there is a vaccine that can help prevent it.
Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is:

Highly Contagious – virtually all dogs become infected after first exposure

Easily Spread  – risk is higher for dogs in adoption centers, shelters, boarding facilities, doggie daycares, and other multiple-dog venues.

Potentially Fatal - up to 8% of sick dogs die from CIV-related complications.
 
Canine Influenza is spread as easily as the common human cold. Symptoms include but are not limited to cough, runny nose and high fever, and are very similar to kennel cough/bordetella. The virus affects the lower respiratory systems (lungs) and can be fatal in serious cases, and ones where these symptoms are not recognized right away, allowing the virus to gain strength.
 
The vaccination is given as two parts, with the first and second doses given 2-4 weeks apart. It is NOT recommended that this vaccine be used in place of the bordetella/kennel cough vaccine, as they are two very different vaccinations and cover two very different viruses.
