Reproductive Ultrasound vs. X-Ray: Which One Do You Need?

When managing a breeding program, diagnostic imaging is one of your most important tools. At North Oatlands Animal Hospital and Reproduction Center, we frequently use both ultrasound and X-ray to monitor pregnancies, diagnose reproductive issues, and plan for safe deliveries. Each imaging technique plays a different role—and knowing when to use each can help you make more informed decisions as a breeder.
Ultrasound is typically used earlier in the pregnancy. It provides a live, real-time image of the uterus, allowing us to confirm pregnancy, check fetal development, and evaluate the health of reproductive organs. Ultrasound can detect pregnancies as early as 25–30 days post-breeding. It is especially useful for evaluating heartbeat, movement, and overall viability in developing embryos. In some cases, it also allows us to identify problems such as fetal reabsorption or uterine infections before symptoms appear.
Because it doesn’t use radiation, ultrasound is safe at any stage of pregnancy and can be repeated as needed. However, it has its limitations—it’s not ideal for counting the number of fetuses accurately, particularly if the female is large or carrying a big litter.
That’s where digital X-rays come in. Performed around day 45 or later, radiographs give a clear view of the number, size, and positioning of the fetuses. This is especially valuable when planning for delivery, helping breeders and veterinarians determine if a natural birth is likely to go smoothly or if a C-section may be necessary.
X-rays are also helpful in diagnosing dystocia (difficult labor) and evaluating pelvic anatomy in relation to fetal size. The images can guide timing for surgical intervention and help reduce risks to both the mother and the litter.
At NOAH, we use both ultrasound and X-ray to offer a complete picture of your pet’s reproductive status. Our experienced team will guide you on the appropriate timing for each and explain how the results fit into your overall breeding plan.
When used together, these tools provide critical insights at every stage of the reproductive journey. Trust North Oatlands for clear answers, accurate timing, and compassionate care for both dams and sires.
